The launch and naming ceremony will be undertaken by Bert Biscoe and Pol Hodge, Bert has written a short play for the occasion. A blessing will be given by Roger Bush, The Dean of Truro Cathedral.
Our gig will be named SPURR , the name was suggested by Bert Biscoe. Bert, a Cornwall & Truro City Councillor has supported the Gig Club for many years. He is also a very keen local historian and when approached by the Club for a name for the new gig recounted the historical story of Richard Spurr. Richard was born in Truro in 1800, where he worked as a cabinet maker and became interested in promoting peoples’ rights. He was the leader of a Chartist Movement in Cornwall, he went on to support the cause, moving to London and later to Australia where it is said he built the first Police barracks in Melbourne.
The project to raise funds to purchase the gig has taken a little over 2 years to achieve and commenced with a grant by Sport England for £10,000. Community grants were also given by the following organisations:- Cornwall Council Community Chest funding, Truro City Council, Feock Parish Council, The Carew Pole Trust and South West Water.
In order to raise additional funding required, the whole Club has been very busy with car washes at Ferris Garage, Feock, bag packs at Sainsbury’s & Tesco’s Truro and Marks and Spencers Truro and an Auction of Promises held at the Punchbowl and Ladle, Penelewey.
The Gig was built by Peter Williams of Bodinnick Boat Yard, the actual build was featured on a recent episode of BBC 1’s The One Show which featured this year’s Fowey Regatta.
